Song meaning of Kyrie by Mr Mister
John Lang, a native of Arizona, co-wrote the lyrics of "Kyrie" and all of Mr. Mister's album tracks. While on tour with Adam Ant, Richard Page and Steve George wrote the song.
Worded KÍrie, eléison in Greek, it means "Lord, have mercy" and is found in various Eastern and Western Christian liturgies. The prayer Kþrie, eléison; Christé, eléison; Kþrie, eléison prays, "Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy." Page claims that the song is basically a prayer throughout.
There is a legend that vocalist Richard Page composed "Kyrie" while unconscious from an attack in a hospital bed. According to John Lang, he was the one who was beaten three years before to the song's writing, and the event is unrelated to the song.
It was released sometime around Christmas of 1985, and in March of 1986 it became the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100, staying there for two weeks. Additionally, it spent a week at the top of the Billboard Top Rock Tracks list. In March 1986, the song reached its peak at number 11 in the UK.
Kyrie lyrics by Mr Mister
Kýrie, eléison
Kýrie, eléison
Kýrie
The wind blows hard against this mountainside
Across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide
Setting my feet upon the road
My heart is old, it holds my memories
My body burns a gem-like flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine
Is where I find myself again
Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night
Kýrie, eléison
Where I'm going, will you follow?
Kýrie, eléison
On a highway in the light
When I was young, I thought of growing old
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road
Or only wished what I could be
Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night
Kýrie, eléison
Where I'm going, will you follow?
Kýrie, eléison
On a highway in the light
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh
Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night
Kýrie, eléison
Where I'm going, will you follow?
Kýrie, eléison
On a highway in the light
Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel (will you follow?)
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night
Kýrie, eléison
Where I'm going, will you follow? (will you follow)
Kýrie, eléison
On a highway in the light
Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel (yeah)
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night
Kýrie, eléison
Where I'm going, will you follow? (will you follow?)
Kýrie, eléison
On a highway in the light
Kýrie, eléison
Down the road that I must travel (will you follow?)
Kýrie, eléison
Through the darkness of the night
Kýrie, eléison
Where I'm going, will you follow? (will you follow)
