Song Meaning of Closing Time by Semisonic

Semisonic's song "If I Run" was frequently played at the conclusion of their shows before they wrote "Closing Time". Wilson decided to write a new song for the band to play at the conclusion of their set since they were sick of performing the same song every night. Although Wilson did not intentionally set out to write a song about giving birth, he has acknowledged that "part way into the writing of the song, I realised it was also about being born." Wilson's partner was expecting at the time.

The song peaked at number one on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and made it into the top 50 in the UK, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand. The latter country has declared it gold, and in 1999 it received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Song.

Lyrics of Closing Time by Semisonic

Closing time

Open all the doors and let you out into the world

Closing time

Turn all of the lights on over every boy and every girl

Closing time

One last call for alcohol so finish your whiskey or beer

Closing time

You don't have to go home but you can't stay here

I know who I want to take me home

I know who I want to take me home

I know who I want to take me home

Take me home

Closing time

Time for you to go out to the places you will be from

Closing time

This room won't be open 'til your brothers or your sisters come

So gather up your jackets, move it to the exits

I hope you have found a friend

Closing time

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end

I know who I want to take me home

I know who I want to take me home

I know who I want to take me home

Take me home

Closing time

Time for you to go out to the places you will be from

[2x]

I know who I want to take me home

I know who I want to take me home

I know who I want to take me home

Take me home

Closing time

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end
