Song Meaning and Background of Wonderwall by Oasis

Noel Gallagher is credited with writing this unapologetically genuine and heartfelt ballad, which has grown to be one of the biggest rock anthems of the last 20 years,

In 2020, it crossed 1 billion Spotify streams and makes at least $1 million annually. Ironically, Liam Gallagher was first hesitant about it.

I said, ‘I don’t like this — it’s a bit fonky,’” he told Rolling Stone last year. “I got Police vibes. It was a bit Sting. I like the heavier stuff.”

However, he ultimately made the decision to give it a shot. The entire song was completed in around two days, with Liam finishing off his voice in a matter of hours and Noel handling all the guitars and bass. I was always anxious to get to the bar,' he admitted.

The song was originally titled "Wishing Stone". Gallagher told NME in 1996 that "Wonderwall" was written for Meg Mathews, his then-girlfriend and later wife.

However, after Gallagher and Mathews divorced in 2001, he said the song was not about her: "The meaning of that song was taken away from me by the media who jumped on it, and how do you tell your Mrs it's not about her once she's read it is? It's a song about an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself."

The song's final title was inspired by George Harrison's solo album Wonderwall Music.

Lyrics of Wonderwall by Oasis

Today is gonna be the day

That they're gonna throw it back to you

By now you should've somehow

Realized what you gotta do

I don't believe that anybody

Feels the way I do about you now

Backbeat, the word is on the street

That the fire in your heart is out

I'm sure you've heard it all before

But you never really had a doubt

I don't believe that anybody feels

The way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk are winding

And all the lights that lead us there are blinding

There are many things that I would

Like to say to you

But I don't know how

Because maybe

You're gonna be the one that saves me

And after all

You're my wonderwall

Today was gonna be the day

But they'll never throw it back to you

By now you should've somehow

Realized what you're not to do

I don't believe that anybody

Feels the way I do

About you now

And all the roads that lead you there were winding

And all the lights that light the way are blinding

There are many things that I would like to say to you

But I don't know how

I said maybe

You're gonna be the one that saves me

And after all

You're my wonderwall

I said maybe (I said maybe)

You're gonna be the one that saves me

And after all

You're my wonderwall

I said maybe (I said maybe)

You're gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)

You're gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)

You're gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)
