Song Meaning and Background of Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles

The song "Watermelon Sugar" was written by Styles, Mitch Rowland, and the producers Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson.

It was written in September 2017 while Styles was taking a break from his Harry Styles: Live on Tour schedule. They entered The Cave Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, and began the recording session by simply experimenting. 

They eventually began brainstorming and came up with the catchy chorus melody. They acquired Richard Brautigan's book In Watermelon Sugar and believed it would make a good hook. According to rumours, the song is about Camille Rowe, an In Watermelon Sugar fan and Styles' ex-girlfriend.

The song was successful financially as well, reaching the top ten in more than 20 nations, including the UK, Australia, Canada, and the US, where it debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list for Styles's first time. It won the Best Pop Solo Performance Grammy Award in 2021 and Song of the Year at the 41st Brit Awards in the same year.
