When Shawn Mendes claimed that Camila Cabello is the subject of every song in his discography in the 2020 Netflix documentary Wonder, it shed new light on the song. When they were opening acts on Austin Mahone's tour in the summer of 2014, the two became acquainted with one another. They collaborated for the first time the following year on the song "I Know What You Did Last Summer," which was released while Cabello was dating Mahone. That relationship didn't work out since Mahone claimed Becky G was his first true relationship shortly after hooking up with her. Mendes is suggesting to Cabello in this song that he would treat her better than Mahone.
