Song Meaning of Senorita by Shawn Mendes

Charli XCX, Ali Tamposi, Jack Patterson of Clean Bandit, and Andrew Watt, the song's producer, had the idea for the song during a studio session. Prior to the recording session, Watt composed a guitar riff that he compared to Fleetwood Mac and José Feliciano. During the recording session, he played the guitar melody as lyrics and melodic concepts were developed to go along with it. "I love it when you call me señorita" was the chorus's opening line when the melody and lyrics for the song finally came together.

Watt suggested that Shawn Mendes record the song as a duet and sent him the song's rough chorus. Mendes accepted and remarked that Camila Cabello would be "the only person" with whom he could record the song. Watt then forwarded the song to producers Cashmere Cat and Benny Blanco, who were impressed and started working on the music together, deciding to keep it straightforward to allow room for the vocals.

Before they finally met in person at a recording studio a few weeks before the song's release, Mendes and Cabello collaborated on the song's lyrics over FaceTime. Cabello had been making changes to the vocal tracks and lyrics. While the song was already being mixed, Cabello came up with the line, "You say we're just friends, but friends don't know the way you taste," which required Mendes to record fresh vocals and sing new harmonies.

With combined sales and track-equivalent streams of 16.1 million units internationally, it was the third best-selling single of 2019 in the entire world.
