Meaning of the song Ophelia by The Lumineers, and what it is about

Schultz stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the words of the song are "a vague reference to people falling in love with fame."

The Band having published a song with the same name years before, so the Lumineers felt they had to come up with a suitable replacement for Ophelia soon after. Still, this whole matter ended when Schultz concluded that there was no other name that had "the right musicality to it." The songwriting process became so challenging that Schultz had to give up on the project since he was unable to write "good" verses to support the hook he had written.

When it came time to start working on a new record in January 2015, the long-gone "Ophelia" was brought back to life.

Lyrics of the song Ophelia by The Lumineers, and what it is about

Ah, ah, when I was younger, I, I should've known better

And I can't feel no remorse, and you don't feel nothing back

I, I got a new girlfriend, he feels like he's on top

And I don't feel no remorse, and you can't see past my blinders

Oh, Ophelia, you've been on my mind, girl, since the flood

Oh, Ophelia, heaven help the fool who falls in love

I, I got a little paycheck, you got big plans and you gotta move

And I don't feel nothing at all

And you can't feel nothing small

"Honey, I love you," that's all she wrote

Oh, Ophelia, you've been on my mind, girl, like a drug

Oh, Ophelia, heaven help the fool who falls in love

Oh, Ophelia, you've been on my mind, girl, since the flood

Oh, Ophelia, heaven help the fool who falls in love

Oh, Ophelia, you've been on my mind, girl, like a drug

Oh, Ophelia, heaven help the fool who falls in love
