Song Meaning of Man I Feel Like A Woman by Shania Twain
Twain and her then-husband Robert John "Mutt" Lange wrote Man I Feel Like A Woman together. Released in 1999.
It is one of Shania Twain's most popular songs ever, and is a country music song with lyrics about female empowerment.
Shania Twain's experience working at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario to support her siblings after their parents died in a car accident served as the inspiration for the song's title and subsequent lyrics. Twain recalls witnessing some drag queens working at the resort and attributes her inspiration to them.
Twain stated "There was no time to waste on ideas that wouldn't make the album, but something like [the song] was just there. I was inspired right off the bat with that one, for example, by a riff Mutt had going, and the lyrics and phrasing just came out of the blue." And she said "Mutt gave that one a thumbs-up, no questions asked. He could recognize a hit idea when he heard one. His groove flowed easily, and that song came together between the two of us, without any push and pull".
In an interview for Billboard, Twain explained the song's meaning:
"That song started with the title, then it kind of wrote itself. The whole expression is a celebration of being a woman these days, I think we're kind of spoiled in a lot of ways, with the advantages we have. Feminists may not feel that way, but I do. It's pretty darn fun to be a woman."
The music video for "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" is a parody of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" music video, and it features Shania Twain dancing among buff and expressionless male models.
The song was also successful commercially, peaking at number ten in six different nations, as well as twenty-first in Canada and 23rd on the US Billboard Hot 100 list.
Man I Feel Like A Woman lyrics by Shania Twain
Let's go girls! Come on
I'm going out tonight
I'm feelin' alright
Gonna let it all hang out
Wanna make some noise
Really raise my voice
Yeah, I wanna scream and shout
No inhibitions
Make no conditions
Get a little outta line
I ain't gonna act politically correct
I only wanna have a good time
The best thing about being a woman
Is the prerogative to have a little fun
Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy
Forget I'm a lady
Men's shirts
Short skirts
Oh, oh, oh, really go wild
Yeah, doin' it in style
Oh, oh, oh, get in the action
Feel the attraction
Color my hair
Do what I dare
Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free
Yeah, to feel the way I feel
Man! I feel like a woman!
The girls need a break
Tonight we're gonna take
The chance to get out on the town
We don't need romance
We only wanna dance
We're gonna let our hair hang down
The best thing about being a woman
Is the prerogative to have a little fun
Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy
Forget I'm a lady
Men's shirts
Short skirts
Oh, oh, oh, really go wild
Yeah, doin' it in style
Oh, oh, oh, get in the action
Feel the attraction
Color my hair
Do what I dare
Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free
Yeah, to feel the way I feel
Man! I feel like a woman!
The best thing about being a woman
Is the prerogative to have a little fun (fun, fun)
Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy
Forget I'm a lady
Men's shirts
Short skirts
Oh, oh, oh, really go wild
Yeah, doin' it in style
Oh, oh, oh, get in the action
Feel the attraction
Color my hair
Do what I dare
Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free
Yeah, to feel the way I feel
(To feel the way I feel)
Man! I feel like a woman!
Oh, oh, yeah, yeah
I get totally crazy
Can you feel it
Come, come, come on baby
I feel like a woman
