Song Meaning of Love Story by Taylor Swift

Love Story is one of Taylor Swift’s most beloved and well-known songs. It’s about the classic romance between Romeo and Juliet and was released in 2008 as a single off her second album, Fearless. The song’s title and lyrics have inspired many fans to write their own love stories and to follow their dreams.

In the song, Taylor Swift plays Juliet and reflects on the day she first met her true love. She recalls seeing him at a party and how they danced on the balcony. This was a reference to the famous scene from Shakespeare’s play in which Juliet and her lover were forbidden by their families to be together.

She also references Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter, in which a woman in seventeenth-century America is ostracized by her community for being with a man she loves outside of marriage.

The song’s acoustic guitar gives it a sweet and romantic feel, which is appropriate for the story of a young girl falling in love with her soulmate. The addition of the drums during the pre-chorus is a nice contrast to the soft, summery tone of the song. The drums are reminiscent of the beats that would be heard in a club or at a party, which gives the feeling of the couple running away to spend time with each other.

As with most of Swift’s songs, the lyrics are based on real events in her life. During a 60 Minutes interview, Swift explained that the song was about a guy that she had a crush on. He was a little bit older than her and she thought he was perfect for her. The line “And you were Romeo, throwing pebbles, and my daddy said 'Stay away from Juliet'" stuck in her head and she wrote the song about it.

Love Story lyrics by Taylor Swift

We were both young when I first saw you

I close my eyes and the flashback starts:

I'm standing there

On a balcony in summer air

See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns

See you make your way through the crowd

And say, "Hello."

Little did I know

That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles

And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet."

And I was crying on the staircase

Begging you, "Please don't go."

And I said

"Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone

I'll be waiting. All there's left to do is run

You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess

It's a love story. Baby, just say 'Yes'."

So, I sneak out to the garden to see you

We keep quiet 'cause we're dead if they knew

So, close your eyes

Escape this town for a little while

Oh, oh

'Cause you were Romeo. I was a scarlet letter

And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet."

But you were everything to me

I was begging you, "Please don't go!"

And I said

"Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone

I'll be waiting. All there's left to do is run

You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess

It's a love story. Baby, just say 'Yes'

Romeo, save me. They're tryna tell me how to feel

This love is difficult but it's real

Don't be afraid. We'll make it out of this mess

It's a love story. Baby, just say 'Yes'."

Oh, oh, oh

I got tired of waiting

Wondering if you were ever coming around

My faith in you was fading

When I met you on the outskirts of town

And I said

"Romeo, save me. I've been feeling so alone

I keep waiting for you, but you never come

Is this in my head? I don't know what to think."

He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said

"Marry me, Juliet. You'll never have to be alone

I love you, and that's all I really know

I talked to your dad. Go pick out a white dress

It's a love story. Baby, just say 'Yes'."

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

'Cause we were both young when I first saw you
