When James Anthony Carmichael visited Richie, the singer greeted him with such statement, to which Carmichael responded, "Finish that song." This is how the song's creation began. Richie thought the song was "corny" at first, but "by the time I finished the verse, I fell in love with the song again."

Marjorie Hoffman White, a songwriter, filed a lawsuit against Richie for allegedly stealing her 1978 song "I'm Not Ready to Go" and using it in the song.
