Song Meaning of Hello by Lionel Richie, and what it is about
The song's catchy lyric, "Hello, is it me you're looking for?" makes it unforgettable. When James Anthony Carmichael visited Richie, the singer greeted him with such statement, to which Carmichael responded, "Finish that song." This is how the song's creation began. Richie thought the song was "corny" at first, but "by the time I finished the verse, I fell in love with the song again."
Marjorie Hoffman White, a songwriter, filed a lawsuit against Richie for allegedly stealing her 1978 song "I'm Not Ready to Go" and using it in the song.
The story of Richie, an acting and theatre teacher who seems to have an unrequited crush on a blind student, is told in the music video for the song "Hello," which was directed by Bob Giraldi. He later learns that she feels the same way because she is working on a clay sculpture of his head.
The song, which was selected as the third single from his second solo album, Can't Slow Down (1983), was released in 1984 and quickly rose to the top of the Billboard charts. It also spent six weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart.
Hello lyrics by Lionel Richie
I've been alone with you
Inside my mind
And in my dreams I've kissed your lips
A thousand times
I sometimes see you
Pass outside my door
Hello!
Is it me you're looking for?
I can see it in your eyes
I can see it in your smile
You're all I've ever wanted
And my arms are open wide
'Cause you know just what to say
And you know just what to do
And I want to tell you so much
I love you
I long to see the sunlight in your hair
And tell you time and time again
How much I care
Sometimes I feel my heart will overflow
Hello!
I've just got to let you know
'Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely?
Or is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven't got a clue
But let me start by saying I love you
Hello!
Is it me you're looking for?
'Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely?
Or is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven't got a clue
But let me start by saying I love you
