Song Meaning of Buddy Holly by Weezer, and what the song is about

Weezer’s 1994 breakout single, Buddy Holly, was written by frontman Rivers Cuomo’s for his girlfriend, about nerdy romance and was nearly removed from the band’s self-titled debut, Weezer (the blue album).

“We had the sense that it could be taken as a novelty song, and people aren’t going to take the album seriously,” Sharp told Rolling Stone. After producer Ric Ocasek heard the receptionist at the recording studio humming it, he insisted they keep it in.

The lyrics reference the song's 1950s namesake and actress Mary Tyler Moore. It reached number two and number 34 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart and the US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, respectively. The song also reached number six in Canada, number 12 in the United Kingdom and number 14 in Sweden.

For Weezer, when many people think of them the first image that comes to mind is Fonzie dancing around Arnold's to "Buddy Holly." As Spike Jonze made a unique video for the song that it seemed like the band was part of an actual Happy Days episode. MTV played the video relentlessly on its channel.

Rivers Cuomo was sadly inspired to write the song after his friends made fun of his Asian girlfriend, which explains the lines "your tongue is twisted/your eyes are slit."

Lyrics of the song Buddy Holly by Weezer

What's with these homies dissin' my girl?

Why do they gotta front?

What did we ever do to these guys

That made them so violent?

Woo-hoo, but you know I'm yours

Woo-hoo, and I know you're mine

Woo-hoo, that's for all the time

I look just like Buddy Holly

And you're Mary Tyler Moore

I don't care what they say about us anyway

I don't care 'bout that

Don't you ever fear, I'm always near

I know that you need help

Your tongue is twisted, your eyes are slit

You need a guardian

Woo-hoo, and you know I'm yours

Woo-hoo, and I know you're mine

Woo-hoo, that's for all the time

I look just like Buddy Holly

And you're Mary Tyler Moore

I don't care what they say about us anyway

I don't care 'bout that

I don't care 'bout that

Bang! Bang! Knock on the door

Another big bang, get down on the floor

Oh no! What do we do?

Don't look now but I lost my shoe

I can't run and I can't kick

What's a matter, babe, are you feelin' sick?

What's a matter, what's a matter, what's a matter you?

What's a matter, babe, are you feelin' blue? Oh-oh!

That's for all the time

That's for all the time

I look just like Buddy Holly

And you're Mary Tyler Moore

I don't care what they say about us anyway

I don't care 'bout that

I don't care 'bout that

I don't care 'bout that

I don't care 'bout that
