Song Meaning of Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, and what it is about
Stevie Nicks wrote the airy "Dreams" in response to a lover encouraging her to go her own way.
The Fleetwood Mac band were going through emotional turmoil as they were making the Rumours album. Divorce proceedings were ongoing for Mick Fleetwood. Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were calling it quits after an eight-year romance, while Christine McVie and John McVie were also splitting.
"We had to go through this elaborate exercise of denial," explained Buckingham "keeping our personal feelings in one corner of the room while trying to be professional in the other."
"I sat down on the bed with my keyboard in front of me," said Nicks. "I found a drum pattern, switched my little cassette player on and wrote 'Dreams' in about 10 minutes. Right away I liked the fact that I was doing something with a dance beat, because that made it a little unusual for me."
Nicks played the song to the rest of the group, "They weren't nuts about it. But I said 'Please! Please record this song, at least try it.' Because the way I play things sometimes... you really have to listen."
The band's lone number-one hit in the US, "Dreams" sold over a million copies and peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. "Dreams" also peaked at the top of the RPM Top 100 Singles chart in Canada.
Lyrics of Dreams by Fleetwood Mac
Now here you go again
You say you want your freedom
Well, who am I to keep you down?
It's only right that you should
Play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound
Of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat... drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost...
And what you had...
And what you lost
Thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Say... Women... they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean... you'll know, you'll know
Now here I go again, I see the crystal visions
I keep my visions to myself
It's only me
Who wants to wrap around your dreams and...
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
Dreams of loneliness...
Like a heartbeat... drives you mad...
In the stillness of remembering what you had...
And what you lost...
And what you had...
And what you lost
Thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Women they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you'll know
Oh, thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Say women they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you'll know, you'll know
You will know, you'll know
