Meaning of the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, and what it is about
The song was allegedly written by lead singer Gary Lightbody in the garden of song producer Jacknife Lee's Kent villa after he sobered following a white wine binge. Lightbody sings a straightforward melody with little guitar accompaniment that builds to a crescendo throughout the song.
Lightbody's father used the expression "chasing cars" to describe a girl he was crushing on: "You're like a dog chasing a car." You simply wouldn't know what to do with it if you did, therefore you'll never catch it."
In an interview with Rolling Stone, he said "It's the purest love song that I've ever written. There's no knife-in-the-back twist. When I read these lyrics back, I was like, 'Oh, that's weird.' All the other love songs I've written have a dark edge."
After appearing in the second season finale of the medical drama Grey's Anatomy, which aired on May 15, 2006, the song became extremely well-known in the United States.
Both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart saw the song peak at number five and number six, respectively.
Lyrics of the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol
We'll do it all
Everything
On our own
We don't need
Anything
Or anyone
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
I don't quite know
How to say
How I feel
Those three words
Are said too much
They're not enough
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life
Let's waste time
Chasing cars
Around our heads
I need your grace
To remind me
To find my own
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Forget what we're told
Before we get too old
Show me a garden that's bursting into life
All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see
I don't know where
Confused about how as well
Just know that these things will never change for us at all
If I lay here
If I just lay here
Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
